MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon residents can now apply for free doorbell cameras as part of a citywide initiative aimed at deterring crime and strengthening community-police collaboration. Funded by the American Rescue Act, the $62,000 Residential Camera Program seeks to increase public safety by providing up to 400 residents with security cameras.
Program Goals and Impact
The initiative is designed to help prevent low-level crimes, such as package theft, while also capturing crucial evidence for more serious investigations. Officials believe the program will build trust between law enforcement and the community by allowing residents to play an active role in neighborhood security.
Eligibility and Requirements
To qualify, participants must meet several requirements:
- Property Owner Consent – Non-homeowners must secure written permission from the property owner.
- Camera Placement – Cameras must face public spaces, such as streets.
- Pre-Registration – Residents must provide demographic information and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), granting the city’s Department of Public Safety access to footage when necessary.
- Installation & Maintenance – Residents are responsible for installing and maintaining the cameras.
- Footage Storage – Participants must store video recordings for at least seven days and provide access to footage upon request.
Application and Implementation
Approved applicants will receive distribution details from the Director of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement. While the city provides the cameras, participants must handle installation and upkeep.
Officials expect the program to enhance police investigations and deter criminal activity, making Mount Vernon a safer place for all residents. Those interested can apply online through the city’s official platform.
