The Brooklyn Nets suffered a frustrating 110-97 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last night at the Barclays Center, marking another setback in their turbulent season. The game took a dramatic turn when D’Angelo Russell exited in the third quarter with a right ankle sprain, derailing Brooklyn’s momentum and allowing Cleveland to seize control.

Russell’s Injury Changes the Game

Before his injury, Russell was orchestrating the offense effectively, helping the Nets maintain a five-point lead midway through the third. However, once he left the court, the team’s offensive rhythm completely fell apart. Without a reliable ball handler to distribute and create plays, the Nets struggled to keep up with Cleveland’s relentless attack.

Cavs Dominate Down the Stretch

Donovan Mitchell took full advantage of the Nets’ struggles, leading the Cavaliers with 26 points, while Evan Mobley imposed his will in the paint, securing a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Former Net Jarrett Allen also punished his former team, grabbing 20 rebounds and scoring 16 points, solidifying Cleveland’s dominance in the paint.

Nets’ Offense Stalls Without Russell

With Russell out, Cam Johnson became Brooklyn’s leading scorer with 18 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough. The lack of offensive firepower, especially at the point guard position, was glaring. The recent Ben Simmons buyout left Brooklyn thin at the position, and it showed in their inability to respond after Cleveland took control.

Nets Make Roster Moves to Adapt

In response to their growing backcourt concerns, the Nets have made quick adjustments. Killian Hayes was signed to a 10-day contract, and two-way forward Tyrese Martin joined the roster to provide depth. The return of Cam Thomas, sidelined since January 2 with a hamstring injury, is expected soon, which could be a much-needed boost for the struggling squad.

What’s Next?

The Nets need answers fast. If Russell misses extended time, Brooklyn must figure out how to generate offense efficiently. With the playoff race tightening, they can’t afford many more losses like this.
