Haverstraw is set to benefit from a significant investment in affordable housing as part of New York State’s broader housing initiative. Governor Kathy Hochul announced $12.1 million in funding for the development of 30 West, an 81-unit affordable and supportive housing project in the town. This initiative aligns with the governor’s five-year, $25 billion housing plan, which aims to build or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide.

The 30 West development will be constructed on an underutilized municipal parking lot, repurposing the space for much-needed housing. The project includes 20 units designated for homeless households, ensuring that vulnerable residents have access to stable housing and essential services. This approach supports local economic growth while addressing the ongoing housing crisis.

The funding is part of a broader effort to expand affordable housing through the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program. Governor Hochul has championed legislation to expand LIHTC, which could finance over 100,000 new units across New York State in the next decade. The governor emphasized that the solution to the state’s housing crisis lies in constructing more housing and making it accessible to families in need.

Haverstraw’s housing initiative is one of 28 statewide projects receiving part of the $270 million allocated to affordable housing. These developments prioritize sustainability, with many incorporating energy-efficient features under the New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Additionally, all awarded projects, including 30 West, will provide free broadband internet as part of Governor Hochul’s ConnectALL initiative to bridge the digital divide for lower-income households.

This housing expansion reflects New York State’s commitment to increasing housing supply while ensuring long-term affordability. Haverstraw’s investment is a crucial step toward addressing the needs of its residents, reinforcing the town’s role in a statewide effort to combat housing insecurity and foster economic stability.
