Trump Seeks $230 Million Payout From Justice Department Over Past Investigations

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is reportedly urging the Department of Justice to pay him $230 million in taxpayer funds as compensation for what he describes as politically motivated investigations into his past conduct, including the Russia election interference probe and the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case.

The proposed payout, which sources told ABC News would come directly from the Justice Department, would mark the first time a sitting president sought personal financial restitution from the federal government he leads. The settlement would need approval from top DOJ officials, several of whom previously served as Trump’s personal attorneys, including Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Ethics Concerns and Political Backlash

Legal experts and lawmakers swiftly condemned the request, calling it a fundamental conflict of interest. “The ethical conflict is just so basic and fundamental,” one ethics professor told The New York Times, adding that such a move undermines public trust in impartial governance.

Democratic leaders labeled the proposal “definitively illegal,” arguing that Trump cannot direct taxpayer funds to himself through his administration. “You can’t simply transfer $230 million of taxpayer funds because Donald Trump has directed his sycophants within his administration to do just that,” one critic said on Capitol Hill.

Trump Defends His Push

Trump, who now oversees the very agency that once investigated him, said he believes the government “owes him” for years of what he called politically motivated scrutiny. “I was damaged very greatly, and any money that I would get, I would give to charity,” he said. However, he acknowledged the unusual nature of approving his own payout: “It’s awfully strange to make a decision where I’m paying myself.”

The Justice Department has not commented beyond confirming it will follow standard internal review and counsel procedures. If approved, Trump’s payout would total nearly a quarter-billion dollars—an unprecedented personal settlement for a sitting president, financed entirely by American taxpayers.
