MANCHESTER, England — British authorities have declared a deadly attack outside a Manchester synagogue a terrorist incident after a man drove a car into worshippers and then assaulted others with a knife while appearing to wear a fake explosive vest.

The assault occurred outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation on Middleton Road in Crumpsall during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Two members of the Jewish community were killed. Four others remain hospitalized with serious injuries.
Treated as terrorism
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident is being treated as terrorism, and counterterrorism officers are now leading the investigation. Two additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.
“This was a horrific incident, and our thoughts are with the families of the victims,” a police spokesperson said. “We believe we have identified the attacker, but we are not releasing details until confirmation is certain.”
The suspect was intercepted
The suspect was intercepted and fatally shot by armed officers within seven minutes of the first emergency call. Authorities praised the rapid response of police, security personnel, and members of the synagogue, who prevented the attacker from entering the building. At the time, it was filled with worshippers observing Yom Kippur services.
Police say the attacker was seen driving directly into a crowd before exiting the vehicle and stabbing victims. He was reportedly wearing a vest designed to appear as if it contained explosives, though no explosives were found.
Authorities have launched an intense investigation and increased patrols across Greater Manchester. Police urged the public to avoid sharing graphic content online and to report any relevant information directly to law enforcement.
“This attack occurred in a place where people should feel safe — especially during religious observance,” officials said. “We are committed to keeping all communities safe and will provide updates as soon as possible.”
