NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams announced Sunday he is ending his reelection campaign, all but guaranteeing he will be a one-term mayor. The move follows a string of setbacks, including legal troubles, plummeting approval ratings, and a collapse in fundraising — capped off by the loss of public matching funds.
Adams, once seen as a centrist anchor for the city, never recovered from a federal criminal bribery investigation that, while ultimately dismissed, left a lasting political stain. His continued ties to former President Donald Trump only further alienated Democratic voters.
The withdrawal clears the path for a high-stakes general election between Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who shocked the establishment with a primary win in June, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, now mounting an independent bid. With Adams out, moderate Democrats and Trump-aligned figures are reportedly coalescing around Cuomo in hopes of blocking Mamdani’s rise.
