NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A Poughkeepsie man was arrested for armed robbery after allegedly holding up a 7-Eleven gas station in the Town of Newburgh, police said.
Demetrius A. Kelly, 30, was taken into custody on Oct. 1, 2025, following a joint investigation by the Town of Newburgh Police Department and the City of Poughkeepsie Police. Authorities say the arrest stems from a robbery that occurred around 5 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2025, at the Sunoco 7-Eleven located at 78 Route 17K.
According to police, the suspect entered the store, displayed a weapon, stole cash from the register, and fled the scene.
Kelly was located and detained in Poughkeepsie within less than 24 hours. He was then transported to the Town of Newburgh for processing.
He faces the following charges:
- Robbery in the First Degree (Felony)
- Menacing in the Second Degree (Misdemeanor)
- Petit Larceny (Misdemeanor)
Kelly was arraigned in the City of Newburgh Court and remanded to Orange County Jail without bail.
Police credited cooperation across multiple jurisdictions for the swift arrest. Agencies assisting in the case included the City of Newburgh Police, the Town of New Windsor Police, the New York State Police, the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, and the City of Poughkeepsie Police.
The Town of Newburgh Police emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in bringing suspects to justice quickly and safely.
As with all criminal charges, Kelly is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
