September 22, 2025 — British Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon jets flew their first sorties over Poland this week as NATO responds to escalating Russian military provocations near its eastern flank. The move comes after Russian MiG-31s violated Estonian airspace, flying without transponders and failing to communicate with air traffic control — actions described as reckless and threatening by several Western officials.
The incident, confirmed by the UK Ministry of Defence, occurred just hours before the RAF deployment. The two British jets were refueled mid-air over Poland, signaling a new phase of NATO’s Operation Eastern Century, a mission aimed at reinforcing collective defense in light of growing regional instability.

The Russian aircraft reportedly spent 12 minutes inside Estonian airspace. With transponders off and no radio contact, the incursion presented a serious safety hazard to civilian and military aviation alike.
“These are not accidental things,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a statement on Wednesday. “Russia will continue trying to spread its aggression, destabilization, and interference. This is their system.”
NATO members have condemned the violation. The Australian foreign minister labeled the Russian maneuver as “a brazen attempt to intimidate the Baltic states.” At a NATO event, Czech President Petr Pavel issued a stark warning: “If the rules are broken, we must respond appropriately — including militarily.”
The current flashpoint echoes a 2015 incident when Turkey shot down a Russian Sukhoi jet for crossing its airspace. That episode sparked diplomatic fallout but stopped short of military escalation. A decade later, the geopolitical stakes have shifted dramatically amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader Russian-Western tensions.
Moscow has denied any wrongdoing, claiming its jets followed a pre-agreed flight path over international waters. NATO officials have dismissed the explanation, citing a pattern of airspace violations across Eastern Europe.
In response to the latest breach, French fighter jets have also been stationed in Poland. NATO is scheduled to convene early next week to coordinate its next steps. Leaders are expected to consider both military and political measures to counter future incursions.
“This is part of Putin’s plan,” one NATO official said. “He wants to test our unity and our response. We must be clear and firm.”
As Europe braces for further provocations, the skies over the Baltic states have become a high-stakes arena — one misstep away from escalation.
